Day Thirteen - Afternoon

[Posted by Sarah] I was so excited to return to Yellowstone after having visited in '96 with Kay. I had talked for so many years about the herds of bison we saw that we were looking for them right away. Unfortunately we saw only one the entire day! (see picture above).

We stopped at Lake Lodge around noon before driving on to Grant Village where we were staying. Lake Lodge is one of the old-style log lodges with high ceilings and a huge front porch that looks onto Yellowstone Lake. It ended up being one of our favorite places in the park.

After lunch we crossed the street in front of the lodge and went for a walk down to Yellowstone Lake. That's when we discovered that there was a separate wildfire ongoing within the park not far from the lodge. We took a number of great pictures, several of which show the huge plume of smoke from the fire (see above). Joshua napped in his stroller while we explored.

After a couple of hours we got back in the car and drove to Grant Village and got settled in our room there. It was very tiny and so we would spend most of our time exploring the park the next couple of days (hence the separate morning and afternoon posts for each day).

Tomorrow we go to see Old Faithful...
